Getting started: Be curious!

Looking back at my 30+ years at IBM, I think about how I got into technology.  I was trained in finance and thought I would be an investment banker.  At the time that was where the money was, or at least stories like today’s overnight Bitcoin Billionaires.  Nothing to my career story is linear just random reflections and opportunities looking back.   Things like listening to Jacques Cousteau respond to the question, “Why did you spend your life studying the ocean?”  His answer? “Curiosity.”   My curiosity for tech accelerated when I got my own personal computer in 1992.  It was completely fascinating.   What was this magic box?  What was an operating system?  How could I install more RAM?  I even learned to make it do things with code. Then came the internet with the Netscape browser.  Wow, now we could find answers to things and even listen to free music.  The industry grabbed me and I was hooked.  Some things that helped me over the years:

  • Get hands on to learn, and practice what you learn.

  • Be open to change - tech is all about change.

  • Look for industry trends (e.g., AI and Cyber Security are booming). Do you know about these topics?

  • Lean into networking, informational interviews, and finding internships.

  • Work hard. Be nice to people.

Anyway, hope this helps you get started in finding your passion that blends with your work.  For me, it’s been a wonderful career choice.
