You don’t need to code to get a career in IT - or rather: How courage and a little bit of luck helped me land a dream job

I come from a working-class family. I was the first one to get my A-levels and go to university. Initially I wanted to work in tourism, but luckily this did not work out.I was too late for German universities so I went to the Netherlands. Getting my 1st internship was hard, since neither my parents nor I had any business network. But luckily my boyfriend's brother in law knew of a little consulting company that works on big clients and takes many interns. So, I got an internship there and then it was easier to get a follow-up internship. So, luck # 2. And then luck #3. I talked to one of the interns who told me about IBM. I took the courage and applied for Master@IBM. Even though my bachelor had a marketing focus and I had absolutely no idea about IT etc - and I got the job! Now I work with clients how Artificial Intelligence transforms their HR environment. I still don’t know how to code, or anything IT related. My Motto is and always has been „Hire for attitude, train for skills!“

Follow-good-people! People that support you! You can always learn the hard skills on the job. Surrounding you with people that support you, have your back, believe in you and create an safe environment where failing is accepted and support is there – that is crucial!
